Women’s Hockey Drops East-West Consolation Matchup Against Norwich

NORTHFIELD, VT – The Elmira College women’s ice hockey program fell short 6-0 in the consolation matchup against Norwich University on Sunday afternoon at the 12th annual East-West Hockey Classic hosted by Norwich.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Cadets would open the scoring just over six minutes into the first period as a shot taken by Melianne Reynolds would beat Elmira goalkeeper Alayna Breivogel ’25 to make it 1-0. Norwich would strike again at the 10:59 mark of the frame to add to its lead and make it 2-0. Elmira would get a chance on the power-play late in the period and would record a pair of shots on goal.

Trailing 2-0 to open the second period, the Soaring Eagles would get their second power-play opportunity of the contest but would be unable to trim the deficit after tallying just one shot. Norwich would add to its lead at the 6:13 mark with a goal to make it 3-0 before the lead increased to 4-0 following a tally at the 15:29 mark.

Norwich extended its lead early in the third period as Olivia Boyer netted her second on the contest at the 2:22 mark to give the Cadets a 5-0 advantage. The Cadets closed the scoring with a tally at the 18:16 mark to make it 6-0.

Breivogel suffered her first loss of the season between the pipes for the Soaring Eagles after allowing four goals and making 10 saves through 40 minutes of action. Maggie Gilman ’23 made her first appearance of the season for the Soaring Eagles after taking over for Breivogel to start the third period. Gilman allowed a pair of goals and made eight saves in 20 minutes of action.

The Purple & Gold return to the ice for a non-conference matchup at First Arena against Hamilton College on December 31 beginning at 1:00 P.M. Elmira returns to NEHC action on January 6 against Norwich at the Murray Athletic Center.
