The Toronto Maple Leafs are going to win the Stanley Cup in 2025.
That’s not a prediction, that’s a spoiler.
Suffice it is to say, I feel very strongly about this team as they get set to kick off the 2024-25 campaign in Montreal.
Why, though?
For the first time in a decade, it doesn’t feel like things are all about the Core Four. In fact, in short order, I think management has done a great job of adding some layers around the most important players on the roster. Ultimately, in the long run, I think that could help separate this Leafs team from other legitimate contenders around in the NHL.
It was hard to narrow down but here are three reasons why I’m feeling the way I am:
Craig Berube
No disrespect to Sheldon Keefe but a coaching change was long overdue. The new coach bump is real – as seen time and time around the league – and I think the Leafs will benefit greatly from the new voice behind the bench. Most importantly, Berube’s brand of hockey is more conducive to winning in the postseason. Provided he can get the players to buy-in, I think this team is well positioned to do something special next spring.
Stronger Blueline
Slowly but surely, Brad Treliving’s vision on the back end is starting to take shape. In theory, Chris Tanev’s arrival should do wonders for Morgan Rielly. On top of that, Oliver Ekman-Larsson, who’s fresh off hoisting Lord Stanley with the Florida Panthers, should help to provide some serious depth, something this team has been lacking on the blue line for years. Meantime, Jani Hakanpaa shouldn’t be slept on either.
Solidified Crease
In Joseph Woll we trust. If the 25-year-old can find a way to stay healthy, there’s no question he can provide the squad with good enough goaltending to go far come the springtime. He was awesome against Boston. Additionally, I thought the Anthony Stolarz pick-up was a very shrewd move. This tandem is low-key good, and in short order, the rest of the NHL is about to find that out.
