As the Pittsburgh Penguins duo of Tristan Jarry and Joel Blomqvist continue to sort out their games in the NHL, their AHL counterparts in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton are putting up some impressive numbers through four games.

On Saturday, the Penguins shut out the Lehigh Valley Phantoms 3-0, with Filip Larsson earning his first career AHL shutout with 41 saves. His win extended the baby Penguins’ win streak to three games, their only defeat coming on opening night to Charlotte (7-6).

Thanks to Larsson’s shutout, rookie goalie Sergei Murashov’s first North American victory last weekend, and Alex Nedeljkovic’s recent victory on a conditioning stint, the Penguins as a tandem have a 2.75 GAA and .923 SV%.

Interestingly, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (3-1-0) is doing just fine without their true No. 1 goalie, Blomqvist, currently in Pittsburgh skating in the NHL. He led the team with a 2.16 GAA and a .921 SV% in 45 games last season.

However, with a goalie controversy brewing at the NHL level, Larsson’s shutout on Saturday proves there are outstanding goalies in the system, including Murashov.

So, suppose Pittsburgh’s management felt uncomfortable making a move to improve their collective .882 SV% and 4.01 GAA. In that case, they don’t have to worry about acquiring goalie talent in return since the pipeline is solid with future NHL-caliber netminders.
