Suddenly, following a winless weekend (0-1-1), the Leafs appear to be sliding again with the big, bad Bruins on the horizon.
Suffice it is to say, we had a lot to cover on the Monday edition of Leafs Morning Take. First and foremost, I got Rosey’s breakdown of the Arkells concert that he attended in Calgary on Saturday night. Then, we weighed in on the recreated picture with Vince Carter and Mats Sundin. Was that nostalgic, or what? I still don’t understand why Vince Carter has me blocked on X, but that’s for another day.
Thanks to Prime Video, we recapped the back-to-back losses in St. Louis and Minnesota, respectively. From our vantage point, this is more about growing pains and less about roster construction. It will come. We’re both confidence of it. With that in mind, there’s no question that the offence is struggling mightily right now. Coming off a ridiculous 69 goal campaign, it’s been a sluggish start for Auston Matthews. He just doesn’t look right. That said, never of us are overly concerned —at least not right now.
After that, we discussed the crease. Plain and simple, Anthony Stolarz should be deployed at the clear-cut No. 1 right now. He was awesome in Saint Paul on Sunday night. Where would this be without him? Additionally, we tackled the power play, which finally – and I mean finally – scored on Sunday. William Nylander did the honours. They’re still 4-for-40 on the season.
Meantime, it’s just not working for Nick Robertson. Through 11 outings, the 23-year-old has potted one measly goal, and that came in a lopsided loss against Columbus. It goes without saying, but I’m sorry, it’s time. The sample size is large enough. It’s time for the two parties to go their separate ways.
Lots coming your way on the Tuesday edition of Leafs Morning Take. Primarily, we’ll focus on previewing Leafs/Bruins, which is a sneaky big one.
