Hampton, Janzen Named EC Athletes of the Week

ELMIRA, N.Y. — Maddie Hampton ’24 of the women’s volleyball team and Chris Janzen ’21 of the men’s ice hockey team have been picked as Elmira College Athletes of the Week for the week ending March 21.

A local native from nearby Horseheads, New York, Hampton shined in her first collegiate match. The 5-foot-4 libero helped the Soaring Eagles beat Nazareth in four sets on Monday, March 15, EC’s first win over the Golden Flyers in a decade. She finished the match one shy of the team lead with 16 digs, while tying the match-high with four service aces. Hampton’s passing proved to be a key to EC’s victory, too, as she committed receiving errors on only two of 32 attempts.

Hampton and the rest of the Soaring Eagles will return to Pat Thompson ’75 Court at Speidel Gymnasium on Wednesday, March 24, when Elmira hosts St. John Fisher College at 7:00 p.m.

Janzen had a busy weekend between the pipes for the men’s ice hockey team, which split a two-game series with Wilkes. In Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, on Friday night, the senior netminder backstopped the Purple and Gold to an exciting 4-3 overtime victory with a career-high 46 saves. In the home half of the series, the Pelham, Ontario, native added 28 more stops. Across both contests, Janzen logged a 2.95 goals-against average and a .925 save percentage in 122:13 minutes of action.

On Tuesday, March 23, Elmira and Utica will resume play and finish the third period from their United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) tilt on March 6, which was suspended due to COVID-19 protocol. The Pioneers will pick up where they left off, holding a 5-2 lead with 20 minutes remaining in regulation.
