PINE VALLEY, N.Y. – For the second time in three meetings this season, the No. 11 Elmira College women’s ice hockey program would go into overtime against the No. 8 Norwich University Cadets. The Soaring Eagles and Cadets would play to a 1-1 tie in a battle between two of the top teams in the New England Hockey Conference on Friday.

JUST THE BASICS:
SCORE: No. 11 Elmira 1, No. 8 Norwich 1 (OT)
LOCATION: Pine Valley, New York | Murray Athletic Center
TEAM RECORDS: Elmira (10-4-1, 7-1-1 NEHC), Norwich (10-3-2, 8-1-1 NEHC)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Both Goalkeepers would keep the game scoreless through the opening 20 minutes of action as Elmira netminder Chloe Beaubien ’23 made seven saves, while her counterpart for Norwich, Leocadia Clark, stopped 14 shots.
  • Norwich would strike first in the contest following a penalty by the Soaring Eagles, which would give the Cadets an extra-skater advantage. Olivia Boyer would poke a loose puck past Beaubien off a scramble in front of the net at the 9:29 mark to give the Cadets a 1-0 advantage.
  • The Soaring Eagles would get three different opportunities on the power play in the second period and tallied seven shots in the process but would be unable to find the back of the net against Clark and the Cadets.
  • Claire Meeder ’23 provided the equalizer for the Purple & Gold midway through the third period to knot the score 1-1 as her wrist shot would beat Clark at the 9:38 mark. Meeder gained the puck off a turnover by the Cadets and would pick her spot over the shoulder of the Norwich goalkeeper.
  • Despite the Soaring Eagles holding a 12-2 advantage in shots on goal in the third period, the contest would require overtime as both sides skated 3-on-3 for five minutes. Elmira would have several good scoring chances against the Cadets in the extra frame but couldn’t put one past Clark before the final buzzer sounded.
  • Beaubien denied a late opportunity for the Cadets in the final seconds of overtime and finished the contest with 18 saves on 19 shots as she moved her record to 4-0-1 on the season for the Purple & Gold. In net for Norwich, Clark registered 44 saves on 45 shots to keep her squad in the contest.
