Four weeks of the Premier Hockey Federation season are in the books following a pair of Sunday matchups.
Connecticut Whale 3, Montreal Force 2
It took three games but last year’s regular season champions are in the win column, and who else but the reigning league MVP delivered the dagger in Sept-Iles. Connecticut’s Kennedy Marchment broke a 2-2 knot with just over five minutes left in regulation time, scoring 47 seconds after Montreal’s Kaity Howarth tied it with her first goal of the season. Emma Keenan and Alyssa Wohlfeiler also scored for the Whale, and Sarah Lefort tallied for the Force. Abbie Ives picked up the win in her second start of the season with a 35-save performance, while Tricia Deguire stopped 30 and suffered her first loss in four starts.
Metropolitan Riveters 1, Minnesota Whitecaps 4
Make it two-straight wins for Minnesota who pick up six big points in the standings by completing their first weekend sweep of the season. Three unanswered goals in the third period did the trick for the Whitecaps, with captain Sydney Brodt scoring the winner at 5:58 of the final frame. Natalie Snodgrass added some insurance with less than two to play, and Liz Schepers sealed it with an empty-netter soon after. Jonna Albers opened the scoring in the second period, with Minttu Tuominen’s first career goal giving the Riveters their only score of the game. Both goaltenders earned the same result a second day in a row as Amanda Leveille turned aside 24 in victory, and Eveliina Makinen stopped 25 in defeat.
