Auston Matthews, Morgan Rielly, Justin Bieber headline the NHL’s 2024 All-Star captains

The first 32 all-stars were selected. The following 12 were voted in by you, the fans. And tonight, the NHL has officially released the captains and celebrity co-captains that will draft their team in Toronto to begin the 2024 All-Star weekend.

If you need a little reminder as to who has been named an all-star this year, here is the list of all the players that were announced over the past couple of weeks:

The 12 highlighted players represent the players who were voted in. Among the 12 were three Maple Leafs, Mitch Marner, William Nylander and Morgan Rielly, with Nylander and Rielly making their first all-star appearance, and what better way to make your first appearance than in your home city in front of the home fans?

Nevertheless, let’s get to the team captains and co-captains the NHL has selected for the player draft!

Team #1 – Team Matthews

The first captain is none other than Toronto’s Auston Matthews. Morgan Rielly has also been announced as an assistant captain, with Maple Leafs mega fan Justin Bieber as the celebrity co-captain. Matthews and Bieber were the two most predictable choices to become captains at this All-Star weekend, and it turned out to be true.

I published an article in late December about eight possible candidates that could be named a celebrity captain at All-Star weekend, and, of course, Justin Bieber was number one on that list for many reasons, and it turned out to be a good idea to include him in the article.

Team #2 – Team McDavid

The next team will be Team McDavid, with Connor as captain, teammate Leon Draisatil as his assistant captain and known Maple Leafs fan Will Arnett as their celebrity co-captain. Similarly to the Bieber selection from my article, I also had Arnett as a choice, given his love for hockey and the Toronto Maple Leafs. Unfortunately, he’ll be on a team with Oilers players, but he’ll love the opportunity.

Team #3 – Team MacKinnon

The third team will be captained by arguably the early MVP front-runner of this season, Nathan MacKinnon, and he will be accompanied by his teammate Cale Makar as an assistant captain and Canadian singer-songwriter and dancer Tate McRae as the celebrity co-captain.

Team #4 – Team Hughes

Lastly, the final team will be led by brothers Quinn and Jack Hughes, with 4-time Grammy winner Michael Buble as their celebrity co-captain. Buble is also a massive Vancouver Canucks fan – as well as a Canadian – so selecting him as a co-captain seems like the right choice for this team.
