Pierre McGuire thinks John Tavares could really thrive in a third line centre role for Toronto: Leafs Morning Take

by

The season opener may still be 83 long days away but it’s never too early to start projecting what the roster could potentially look like.

That said, we kicked off the latest edition of Leafs Morning Take by talking some Brandon Montour. While guesting on TSN’s OverDrive on Wednesday afternoon, the blue line, who’s fresh off winning a Stanley Cup with Florida, revealed that the Leafs were certainly in the mix for him on July 1. Ultimately, he elected to sign a fat 7-year, $50 million ticket with the Seattle Kraken. On paper, Montour would’ve been an excellent addition, but probably not at that price —at least for the Maple Leafs.

Presented by Greta Bar YYZ, we got into the meat of the show. Firstly, we discussed Easton Cowan and Noah Chadwick being invited to Hockey Canada’s Summer Showcase World Junior camp. Even he’s not on the Leafs, Cowan will indisputably be a marquee player on that team. Additionally, the 6-foot-4 Chadwick took so monster strides this past season. He was just one of 13 defencemen invited to the camp.

After that, we began to dissect the roster. Firstly, we laid out Daily Faceoff’s projected lines. Then, I unveiled what I think the roster should look on October 9th in Montreal —assuming nothing changes. All in all, there’s no question that Toronto’s lacking some series depth up front, especially on left wing and up the middle. And that’s why it should come as no shock to know that Brad Treliving has been scouring the trade market since the beginning of July looking for some help at forward. We’ll see if anything transpires.

Meantime, long-time NHL broadcaster/coach/scout/executive Pierre McGuire dropped by the show. Big picture, Pierre’s a big fan of what the Leafs have done this summer. Most notably, he referenced Treliving’s familiarity with guys like Tanev and Ekman-Larsson. Additionally, we broke down Craig Berube and the difference he could potentially make. Also, Pierre dished on John Tavares and where he thinks the Leafs’ captain is at in his career.

Leafs Morning Take will return on Tuesday at 11 AM ET. Talk then!
