Eight Different Soaring Eagles Score In 9-0 Victory Against Salem State

SALEM, MASS. – Holley Riva ’23 tallied four points and four different Soaring Eagles recorded their first collegiate goal as the Elmira College women’s ice hockey program notched a 9-0 victory on Saturday in a New England Hockey Conference matchup against Salem State.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Erika Goleniak ’25 opened the scoring in the contest for the Purple & Gold as she redirected a shot taken by Riva that would find the back of the net at the 14:04 mark of the first period to make it 1-0. That goal would be the difference through the opening 20 minutes of action as Elmira tallied a total of 19 shots on goal.

An early penalty taken by the Vikings in the second period would eventually lead to a power-play goal for the Soaring Eagles as Lexi Hoffmann ’24 notched her first collegiate goal to make it 2-0. Mary McCafferty ’22 and Claire Meeder ’23 each recorded assists on Hoffmann’s goal. Sophie Compeau ’25 would follow with her first collegiate goal for Elmira as she made it 3-0 at the 12:13 mark off assists from MK Boyle ’26 and Claire Elfring ’25. Riva and McKenzie Schmidt ’25 both followed with goals later in the frame as Elmira would take a 5-0 advantage into the third period.

Less than five minutes into the third period, McCafferty would net her first goal of the season as she made it 6-0 with Riva and Goleniak adding assists. Elizabeth LePage ’25 would be the third different Elmira skater to tally her first collegiate goal in the contest as her marker at 10:45 of the frame made it 7-0. Riva would add her second goal of the night to make it 8-0 before Alayna Toole ’26 would complete the scoring with just 15 seconds remaining for her first collegiate goal.

Alayna Breivogel ’25 recorded the second shutout of her career as she improved to 1-0 on the season in net for the Soaring Eagles. Goleniak and Riva each finished the contest with four points, while seven different players recorded at-least two assists for Elmira. LePage and McCafferty each recorded a +5 plus/minus rating for the Soaring Eagles.
